This story is a tragic tale of unrequited love, intrigue, greed and suspense. The time: the late 1800s. The place: Baker Street, London, the home of our hero - ace detective Gridlock Spumes, who agrees to help the plight of a beautiful young heiress who is being blackmailed. Smitten by her charms (and the opportunity to show his unparalleled powers of detection), he accepts the case. She accompanies him, along with his trusty man servant, Doctor Phuckwytte Prunestone, to a Sanatorium in deepest rural France, where foul play is suspected. Plot and counter plot results in the gentlemen being imprisoned by a ruthless gang, but finally escaping back to 'Old Blighty'. Newspaper headlines reveal that the nation's priceless treasures have been stolen, masterminded by Gridlock's past arch-enemy. With renewed vigour and help from Scotland Yard, an epic chase ensues, leading our two stalwarts deep into the bowels of the capital's dark and dangerous underworld of deceit and corruption. It appears that powerful, high-ranking individuals are involved in crimes that not only threaten the country's security, but also the very fabric of Victorian society. A warning to readers with a nervous disposition: this book contains references to flatulence, cross-dressing and liquorice allsorts.
